The theme I chose the theme blue oceans because I liked to think about tangible solutions to help elderly people. I am really interested in tangible products and in designing smart products for health purposes. Especially for elderly people tangible products can be of big value, because they are not as used to new technologies as younger generations. Also the challenge to find another solution than putting something in an app influenced me to choose this theme. Almost everything could be put in an app, but sometimes the simplicity of a tangible product makes the experience for the user a lot more pleasant. In this theme I expect to pay attention to the user experience, because it is a broad target group from another generation with other needs. I really liked working with the personas and getting to know the story of elderly people who are struggling with dehydration. I think personas can really help a designer getting a good view of the user and coming up with new ideas. I expected that we would get more in contact with the users of the product, but in the project we did not communicate with the real users. In my previous projects I would always go to the users to make good design decisions, but in this project we focussed more on the business side of the design. I did not expect that the project would evolve a lot around business, but it was nice to put my marketing skills, from the course ‘Marketing management’ at SDU, to work. The project When you are designing a product together you will learn to use all the competencies of all study areas in your group. In this project the design was mostly about business, I had a marketing course which I could really nicely use for this. And the students-to-students session helped showing other competences we could use in the project. It also gave us a view of each other’s abilities and which tasks we could give to which member. I really like to focus on the user, so I did a market analysis for our product. Because my background is in design it was really interesting to see all the products on the market. But also how to analyse competitors in the market, for this I could use the tools learned in ‘Marketing Management’. Furthermore I took on the poster designs, I am used to working with software such as illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. I used Photoshop and illustrator to make the visual design for our posters. In this project I used competencies which I developed in my exchange at SDU, but also competencies I developed from my study back home. In my project it was really nice to experience what my competences are and how to use them. Teamwork Before EiT I already had some experience with working in groups with people from different faculties. Both times I experienced that it is harder to work with people from different faculties than with people from your own faculty. People from different faculties are used to other ways of working and think differently. In your own study area people will understand you better, you speak the same “language”. From this project I learned that it is nice to have a big variety of backgrounds working together. In the beginning of the project it is really hard what to expect from each other, but in the end you will get to know each other better and what to expect. In this project I think it was really hard that we did not really have a leader. I took the leader position on me in the beginning of the project by saying what needed to be done and when to meet. I know from myself that if no one takes on the leader position, I will take on the task. I learned that if I take on the leader task, that I also have to be able to really divide tasks. The project leader role sometimes shifted a little bit and I noticed that I felt a lot more comfortable when someone else also planned tasks and meetings. We also had one team member who was ill for a very long time, which made it difficult to count on him. During the project it was really difficult for me to react to this, because I never experienced this in previous projects. In the future we should establish goals before we begin a project, this helps to get an clear overview. When a group member is ill for a long time, with these goals it would be easier to give this group member some tasks which could be done at home. I think working in a group takes a lot of effort, but if you become a team all the work seems a lot lighter and the results are better. For me a team is group members who support each other and feel a responsibility to each other to help if someone needs help. In a team, members can stimulate each other to strive for better results. Teambuilding activities are really important to make a team from your group, in teambuilding activities group members get to know each other faster. A team is also a group in which every member feels comfortable with a good working atmosphere and good and regular communication. I think in the end we were growing towards becoming a team and the finishing of the report went really fluently.
