I chose this assignment to improve my social cultural awareness. I expected that we would focus on the change of trends over the years, so a bit of history and change in styles and such. I thought it was going to much psychology, because if you want to know the trends you’ll have to know the people behind the trend. In reality the assignment was so much more broad. It was not only knowing what a trend is, which is really difficult because what is a trend? A trend is something in people’s minds it is the idea people have of an product and it is also how a products develop into a certain style. I think this assignment is not only trend watching it is also getting to know many styles and ways to make a product. I think it is an assignment to help get inspiration and an idea what the market consists of as a beginning designer. With exercises done in class you experience what the influenc¬es on a trend are and how people develop certain ideas about a brand or product. For example I really liked the exercise where we had to rip out an elephant out of a piece of paper behind our back. You could see that they were all different, but had some characteristics which were the same. I like that it is a very active assignment and afterwards it becomes clear why you have to do the things you do in this assignment. For example the trip to the dental fair was really nice I liked to look at the products more intense, but in the class following the dental fair it became more clear what you could do with all these different aspects of a design of a product. I knew we were looking at the trend, but I didn’t look at a product in these dif¬ferent categories. I just saw the big picture of the product, but then you are always missing some distinctive characteristics about the product. What I also really liked about the dental fair was that you could see what you as designer could bring to a product, what your task would be in the design of such a product and that it is a big part of the whole object. I saw how important for example different shapes are, there is a reason why they have that shape. The competition amongst dental products was also nice to see, you had a lot of toothbrushes with their own kind of gadget. Like a toothbrush which could bent and one which was fun for children with light. In the ordering of the pictures of the Dental fair I was in the group who ordered the color, which was really great, because I’m really interested in what colors can do with people and it was really nice to learn that you can catogorize for example red in so much sorts of red and there are colors that are between purple and red. You see that a simple thing like color isn’t that simple at all.
