I think products should help support mental and physical vitality. In some cases unhealthy behaviours have to be changed to support mental and physical vitality. In order to be able to design for behaviour change, I chose this course.
Secondly during my previous projects I found that changing or maintaining a behavioyr, without external motivation of for example staff in a care facility, is really difficult. Because with this target group I have to deal with the routines and limited time of staff in care facilities, behaviour change can be really challenging. Therefor to integrate a new technology into these routines, I should learn how to be able to adapt this routine with my design.
In this course I wanted to learn how to change behaviour through design and how to identify and evaluate challenges. With my group I worked on the dental hygiene. In this project we chose to focus on the Action and maintenance stage of the TTM. In these stages the aim is integrate this behavior in a routine, it should become a habit. In the maintenance stage the action will be repeated, and this is what I want to achieve in my projects. To be able to make design choice and evaluate the different iterations of our design, we used the TTM and SDT. To integrate a behavior in someone's routine, I could use the knowledge about internalization described in the SDT. In the Article by M. Gagné and E.L. Deci is stated that field and lab studies have found that supports for the basic needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy facilitate internalization and integration of extrinsic motivation. In conclusion, the methods I got introduced to in this elective showed me how to use different strategies at different stages and phases of the behavior change. In my current project I would like to use the knowledge gained about how to facilitate internalization of extrinsic motivation to be able to integrate the usage of a product in the current routine. In my Final master project I wanted to see how I could use these different methods to stimulate participation, through changing the communication between family, staff and residents at care facilities.
In my final master project I used a value proposition to map the values of the activity coordinator. I used these values to create a product, which would target the intrinsic motivation of use.
