I chose this elective, because I wanted to learn how you really integrate an user in your design. I also wanted to learn how different cultures can influence your design. The main thing I learned when incorporating culture perspectives in your design process it is also very different from one individual to the other. What also changes someone’s cultural values is when they live in another country for a while and this was the case with Rares. The information from the infographics really helped me see the rela¬tions between the cultural aspects of the interview and the integration in the design. If I would not have had this information I would not have seen that Romania really has a different approach what a man is sup¬posed to do or wear then in the Netherlands. It is also a nice way to show quick information, I thought the info¬graphics which were aesthetically the most beautiful also were the clearest. These infographics used a lot of pictures and less text, which gave a good overview for the whole chapter. If you use much text it is not easy for someone who has not read the chapter to get a clear knowledge or understanding of the subject. I think letting someone bring belongings to talk about helps you to start the conversation. I got the most insights from things he said when we were just talking and not when I asked him some questions I prepared. However, these questions were useful to start the conversa¬tions again. I do think I should have planned another session halfway my process to get extra feedback from Rares. With the feedback I got from him when I showed him my final designs I got to know even more about him. And with this feedback I could have made some really great choices. In my overall learning I am trying to show beauty of simplicity in my designs. I am trying to do this, because I want to much in one de¬sign. And I notice in every elective that ‘less really is more’. I think the cause of this is because when you really work on one detail or aspect, you get more out of it. You can spend more time work and reflecting on your choices to achieve this aspect. A great example is the difference between my analogue design and digital design. With the too many different aspects of my digital design there is less depth in my digital design. In my prototyping I wanted to explore engraving, because this is something I really see as the symbol of immortalize a certain bond between people. For example engraving your names in wood. I looked at how I could properly spray-paint on wood and applied this when prototyping. I think this elective really helped me see how going to several itera¬tions of a design can help you to make good design choices.
